As bewildering as it is to witness the president try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your outer garment you must offer him your sweater also.
The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior from scripture requests a form of radical love focused on the needy is what has always made Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in numbers in interim political contests.
